CIPP Pipe Lining 101

Pipelines can become damaged due to a variety of reasons, including (but not limited to) shifting terrains, corrosion, and accelerated wear and tear among other things. Regardless of the culprit, pipes need to be restored promptly and efficiently. Fortunately, Federal EC specializes in pipe rehabilitation in Atlanta, GA, and we have access to a wide range of trenchless solutions appropriate to your pipe concerns.

One of the trenchless pipe lining methods we have at our disposal is CIPP pipe lining. Here’s a quick overview of how the process works:

The CIPP Pipe Lining Process

The cured-in-place pipe lining or CIPP pipe lining process begins by inserting an epoxy resin-saturated felt liner through the affected pipeline. This step can be done without having to dig up the damaged pipe, as the pipe repair technicians only need to access the cleanout pipe. The amount of epoxy resin has to be carefully calculated to achieve the perfect ratio with the liner.

A felt tube made of fiberglass cloth, polyester, or other materials fit to impregnate resin is inverted into a faulty pipe, creating a new and durable pipe within the existing pipe. It is typically done from the upstream access point of the maintenance hole.

When the resin liner is in place, it is then “cured” or treated so it could harden. To do this, various curing methods can be applied. There’s hot water curing which, as the name suggests, uses hot water that’s circulated around the pipe so the resin hardens. There’s also steam curing and UV light curing. These different curing techniques have their ideal applications for underground utility construction and other projects that involve CIPP.

Applications

CIPP pipe lining can be utilized for storm drain rehabilitation, repairing and installing sewer, drainage, and water lines. The process comprises excavating for piping and installing temporary or permanent lines or solutions for breaks in sanitary and water sewer systems.
